The hat arrived with a slight upturn all the way around the brim. I didn't care for that look, but a few minutes with a steam iron allowed me to create the classic fedora "snap brim" in the front while keeping the upturn elsewhere. It really looks sharp now. I had my concerns that the 2" brim would be too small and make the hat both less attractive and practical. Turns out that is not the case for me and I consider the 2" brim to be the utmost in style while still offering decent protection from the elements. If you're looking for a hat to really keep the sun and rain off of you, you might want to consider one of the wider brimmed fedoras. But for what I'm looking for in a hat the Detroit scores a bullseye.

One of the nice things about growing older is you get to know your likes and dislikes, and no longer have to look and act like everyone else. You become comfortable in your own skin and when it comes to clothing and styles, you wear what pleases you, regardless of which era it was in style. If someone points out how out of style I am due to a certain item of clothing I am wearing I simply reply with a smile: Won't you please indulge a foolish old man his simple passions and desires to simply just be himself? I live around the Altoona PA area and everywhere I go the guys are all wearing baggy shorts in conjunction with baseball style caps sporting every logo under the sun, and most worn backwards I might add. Do I take umbrage? Heck no, I accept and respect everyone. This fine hat by Scala is a style that comes from an era I like to refer to as "The Age Of Style And Elegance" a time that appeals to me. The large size was too loose, and Shoebuy promptly exchanged it for a medium which was just a tad too tight, but is beginning to stretch a bit and looks really nice. I like to wear my hats with the brim snapped down and this hat had a wrinkly look in places, so I got out my steam iron and using just the tip of the iron I was pleasantly surprised how easily the wrinkles were removed or made less noticeable, suits me anyhow. So be an individual, wear what pleases you, even if no one else compliments you, you are complimenting yourself by having the courage to just be you.

I was looking for a hat for the weekends with not too big of a brim. This one is great, not too big or too small. The felt is not the highest quality, but for the price you can't beat it.

So, if you want the forties look, this is a nice hat for not a lot of money. My recent hat buying spree lead me to the Detroit. The brim is a little small if you have a bigger face. If that's the case, get the New York version. It has a somewhat larger brim. Nice quality for the money. Fur felts may be my next purchases. Color is good. Black band sets it off nicely.

When I first put it on it didn't fit right-bouncingwith each step. The wind almost took it away! The daybefore I was gonna send it back. A solution. PUNCH IT! I punched the crease out. Then pushed back into shape. It worked! Fits perfect.I wanted a hat with a wide 2.5 inch and the Detroit is it. I'm gonna buy a few more great hats like this. Stay tuned.
